Viettel Money for business: how to accept Viettel Money payments

Viettel Money is the digital finance service of Viettel, Vietnam’s largest telecom group, combining an e-wallet with Mobile Money. Its strength is reach beyond the big cities, including customers who rarely use a banking app. This page explains what Viettel Money is, when it is worth adding to your checkout, the routes for accepting it, and the steps for accepting Viettel Money through CVPay.

What Viettel Money is

Viettel Money is run by Viettel Digital, Viettel’s digital services unit. Users open a wallet, link a bank account, and pay bills, top up phones, shop and send money in the Viettel Money app. Since 2021 Viettel has been among the telecom operators piloting Mobile Money in Vietnam, which lets an account tied to a mobile subscriber number pay for small-value purchases.

Because Viettel has stores and service points across the country, many people in provinces, districts and rural areas hold a Viettel Money account even if they seldom use digital banking. For a business, that is a group of customers VietQR and the wallets popular in the cities may not fully reach.

E-wallet and Mobile Money: the difference

You do not need to separate the two at checkout, but knowing the difference explains why Viettel Money reaches customers other methods miss.

  • E-wallet: an in-app account, usually linked to the holder’s own bank account for top-ups and withdrawals.
  • Mobile Money: an account tied to a mobile subscriber number, which can be topped up or cashed out at the operator’s service points; suited to people without a bank account.
  • For the payer, both are simply “paying with Viettel Money”; the difference is how money gets into the account and the usage limits set by regulation.

When to accept Viettel Money

  • Your customers are spread across many provinces, not only Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
  • You sell digital services, content, top-ups or small repeat payments, where customers want to pay with something already on their phone.
  • You see customers abandon checkout because they have no banking app or are not used to scanning a QR code.
  • You already offer VietQR and one or two popular wallets, and want to reach a new group of customers rather than add a wallet with the same users.

Two ways to accept Viettel Money

The first is to work with Viettel Money directly through its partner and merchant program. That program is aimed at businesses registered in Vietnam with a tax code and a domestic bank account for settlement; the exact conditions are set by Viettel and may change.

The second is to go through a payment gateway that already supports Viettel Money. You sign one contract, pass one company review and integrate one API; Viettel Money sits next to VietQR, MoMo and ZaloPay, and results from every method arrive in the same format. This is usually the route for foreign companies and for anyone who needs several methods at once.

Accepting Viettel Money through CVPay

Each step pairs a fixed CVPay product fact with the work on your side.

  1. 01

    Open a merchant account

Merchants are onboarded after a KYB review. A sandbox environment is opened first, and the sandbox is isolated from production.

Prepare your company documents, a product description and a description of your customers in Vietnam. In the sandbox, test both a successful payment and an abandoned one so your order screen always shows the right status.

  2. 02

    Choose your mix of methods

Pay-ins support three kinds of method: bank transfer, QR code and e-wallet.

Place Viettel Money in the e-wallet group, next to a QR code for banking-app users, rather than making it the only option.

  3. 03

    Confirm Viettel Money is enabled

Pay-in methods include VietQR, MoMo, ZaloPay and Viettel Money in Vietnam, and GCash, Maya, GrabPay and QR Ph in the Philippines.

Before showing a Viettel Money button to customers, confirm with us that the method is enabled on your merchant account, and make a test payment yourself.

Practical notes for a Viettel Money checkout

  • Use the name “Viettel Money” with its logo; many customers still remember the old name ViettelPay, which you can mention in your FAQ.
  • Write short, plain instructions for first-time online payers: which app to open, what to tap, how to confirm.
  • Keep the payment page light so it works on low-end phones and slow mobile connections.
  • Reconcile by order reference every day, together with your other methods.
