MoMo for business: accepting the Vietnam MoMo e-wallet
This page is about MoMo, the Vietnam MoMo e-wallet used by Vietnamese consumers, not the mobile money services of the same name in Africa. MoMo business payments let shoppers in Vietnam pay you from the MoMo app instead of typing a card or bank details. A company can get there by signing up for MoMo’s own merchant service or by using a payment gateway that already offers MoMo. Below we compare the two routes, explain what is different for companies registered outside Vietnam, and walk through accepting MoMo with CVPay.
Which MoMo this page is about
“MoMo” is a name shared by more than one mobile money brand around the world, so search results mix them up. The MoMo on this page is the Vietnamese e-wallet, operated by M_Service and used inside Vietnam for paying bills, topping up phones, shopping online and sending money to friends. Customers fund it from a linked Vietnamese bank account or by receiving transfers, and they pay merchants by confirming inside the app.
If you are planning for customers in Vietnam, MoMo is usually one of the first wallets they look for at checkout. If your users are elsewhere, the services you need are different products with different operators.
Two routes to MoMo business payments
A Vietnamese company that only wants MoMo may find the direct program simplest. The gateway route is the usual choice when the company is foreign, when more than one method is needed, or when the business also has to send money back out.
- MoMo’s own merchant service. MoMo runs a business program for shops and online sellers. It is designed around companies with a Vietnamese business registration, a tax code and a Vietnamese bank account for settlement. MoMo decides the paperwork and the review, so read its current business pages before applying.
- A payment gateway that offers MoMo. Here you sign with the gateway, pass its company review and integrate its API. MoMo is then one option in the same checkout as VietQR and other wallets, and you get one stream of payment notifications whatever the customer chose.
What a company outside Vietnam should expect
Direct wallet programs in Vietnam assume a local legal entity. A business incorporated in Singapore, Hong Kong, Europe or elsewhere usually cannot meet those requirements without first setting up a Vietnamese company, which is a project in itself. Going through a provider that onboards foreign companies lets you test demand in Vietnam before committing to a local entity.
Plan your product around how MoMo is used. Almost every MoMo payment happens on a phone, often by switching from your site or app into the MoMo app and back. Test that hand-off on real Android and iOS devices, and make sure your order page still shows the right state if the customer never comes back to it.
Accepting MoMo through CVPay
The CVPay statement in each step is a fixed product fact; the notes are what to prepare on your side.
- 01
Company review and sandbox
Merchants are onboarded after a KYB review. A sandbox environment is opened first, and the sandbox is isolated from production.
Prepare incorporation papers, ownership and director details, your website or app, and a plain description of what Vietnamese customers will buy. Start building in the sandbox as soon as it opens.
- 02
One integration for every currency
One merchant account and one API cover all three currencies.
Keep the method as a field on your payment request rather than a separate code path for MoMo, so adding VietQR or ZaloPay later does not mean starting again.
- 03
Wallets and other method types
Pay-ins support three kinds of method: bank transfer, QR code and e-wallet.
Decide which mix your audience needs. Wallet users look for MoMo by name, while bank-app users look for a QR code.
- 04
Confirm MoMo is live
Pay-in methods include VietQR, MoMo, ZaloPay and Viettel Money in Vietnam, and GCash, Maya, GrabPay and QR Ph in the Philippines.
Ask us to confirm that MoMo is enabled on your merchant account, then run one real payment of your own before showing it to customers.
MoMo checkout tips
- Show the MoMo name and logo; the pink brand is what customers scan the page for.
- Offer MoMo next to VietQR so bank-app users are not left out.
- On desktop, display a QR the customer can scan with MoMo on their phone; on mobile, switch into the app.
- Keep the order reference visible so support can find a payment when a customer sends a screenshot.
- Treat the server notification as the only proof of payment; never rely on the customer returning to your page.
